ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
Mitigating risks of creating and promoting innovative products
The development and introduction of innovative products are accompanied by extra risks caused by insufficient experience of producing and operating (consuming) innovative products.
Risks of stakeholders including investors, designers, manufacturers and distributors could be formulated as follows:
• nonconformity of the innovative product concept to the expectations of potential consumers (utility, market attractiveness, safety);
• nonconformity of the project to the original concept;
• incompliance of the product characteristics with those stated in the project;
• lack of confidence from potential consumers in products and manufacturers of such products.
Besides the above risks of promoting innovative products, there are risks associated with products whose market access is prevented for safety reasons.
The above risks can be divided into two groups. Such division is dictated by different methods of their mitigation.
The first group covers risks associated with incompliance of products manufactured with the original concept. This group must primarily interest investors. They require the objective, manufacturer-independent assessment of compliance (or non-compliance), which could be used as a basis for subsequent decisions and corrective actions. Their risks expressed in monetary terms could be fairly high, depending on a particular project.
One of the mechanisms of assessing and mitigating risks of the first group when creating and introducing innovative products consists in comparing the contents of projects with a certain set of risk reducing elements like quality plans, QFD, key characteristics, process flowcharts, etc.
Besides, one can assess the status and development opportunities of QMS and other management systems by comparing their actual status with the specified levels of maturity.
Another mechanism of mitigating risks of the first and second groups alike involves voluntary certification of innovative products and quality management systems of organizations developing and manufacturing such products.
The presentation will cover some approaches applied in Russia to enhance confidence in voluntary certification results.
The presented approaches have been tested in a number of innovative product creating projects in Russia.
