Roland K. Jahnke

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
New Global Quality Challenges in Higher Education
“Both developed and developing countries are well aware of the quality crisis in education and its development consequences” (UNESCO, 2012).

Since 2004, Roland K. Jahnke could, as a Delegate, directly experience the global development in the education sector both at all conferences organized by the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) in Barcelona and at several World Conferences and Forums organized by UNESCO. When attending these events, he learned the following lessons: It is true that there are fundamental opportunities for optimization of quality in education. Nevertheless, these opportunities are neither fully utilized in the education sector, in general, nor in higher education sector specifically.
In 2010, the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) accepted this challenge and established a Quality in Education Think Tank (QiETT). Roland K. Jahnke was nominated Chairman of QiETT and has been the IAQ Representative at UNESCO since 2011. In 2012, the QiETT took over an active role in cooperation with the Asian Network for Quality (ANQ). At the IAQ/ANQ Symposium in Hong Kong, it was, as a first step, decided to take care of regional development of quality in education in the Asia Pacific Region. This new quality education initiative taken by IAQ QiETT will help to enable a common regional quality development in the Asia Pacific Region, which will be facilitated by action research.

Besides his long-standing experience with Business Excellence Methods in the Global Service Sector, Roland has comprehensively dealt with different concepts for sustainability. When developing and implementing new methods, it is thus a question of comprehensive know-how from theory and practice. Holistic deliberations help to pave the way for Global Sustainable Excellence also in education sector.
In his keynote speech, Roland K. Jahnke will show these new global quality challenges in the education sector, on the whole, and in higher education specifically. When doing so, he will talk about the first experience made in Asia Pacific. Besides this piloting in the Asia Pacific Region, QiETT has meanwhile initiated an expansion to the regions of MENA (Middle East and North Africa), Africa and South America. Here in Tallinn, there is a good opportunity of expanding this new quality education initiative to Europe and of thinking about new ways to drive progress when it comes to increasing the extent to which quality penetrates the education sector, on the whole.
In the meantime, IAQ has initiated global cooperation with UNESCO. Among other things, this means that a new global quality tool in the education sector is piloted in the member states of UNESCO. On the whole, we will, in future, need a strong Global Quality Community. Quality in education will play a key role. Let us start a new decade of “Global Quality Education First”.
