ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
The Economic Impact on National Economies of Applying Performance Excellenc Criteria

The European Foundation for Quality Management Award has been in place for almost twenty years The Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence Criteria have been utilized for twenty four years and the grandfather of them both the Deming Prize has been practiced now for almost 60 years in some form. They are all similar business excellence models that provide a disciplined and systematic process to operate an organization that achieve proven significantly greater business performance and results.
Given the history that we have utilizing these approaches a number of important questions will be examined. 1) How have the excellence models changed and improved? 2) How effective are the excellence models’ criteria in driving real measurable business results? 3) What economic sectors and industries are benefiting the most from the excellence models? 4) Are the excellence models effecting more organizations and becoming integrated into the body of knowledge of management and leadership? And 5) what effect are the performance excellence models and their results have in impacting the economics of nations?
Empirical studies have shown organizations that have won an award by effectively applying one of the models’ criteria out perform other organizations by wide margins.
This significant performance improvement is captured in many important business metrics including: reduced defects, cycle times and cost of poor quality, increased productivity, sales, profit and return on assets as well as increased employee satisfaction, customer loyalty, market share and shareholder value. It is difficult to argue with these empirically measured results.
Not only do individual organizations improve their performance by applying the criteria and winning but when a company wins there is an improvement in the entire economic sector. For example when the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company won the Baldrige Performance Excellence Award, they set a world class example and benchmark for the hotel industry or sector. Other hotel companies copied and emulated them bringing the performance of the whole sector up within two years.
This was the same experience of the Deming Prize in Japan, which motivated the Baldrige and EFQM. As companies are winning in an individual industry or sector, measurable empirical evidence shows their economic sector of the economy’s performance is improving overall? If the sectors’ performances are improving should not the entire country’s economic performance benefit and it become more competitive? We shall look at the evidence which is demonstrated in an 18 year study of a national economy.
